The Centre has approved Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati as an authorised export point for agarwood chips and agarwood oil, a move expected to ease shipments and expand market access for farmers, producers and exporters in Assam.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced the decision on Saturday, saying the approval followed a request by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In a post on X, Goyal described the decision as a major logistical boost for the state and the Northeast, particularly for those engaged in the agarwood trade.
He said the new export point would bring international markets closer to producers and provide relief to stakeholders in a sector in which Assam is a leading contributor. Goyal also congratulated the people of Assam and the Northeast on the development.
The approval comes weeks after Assam exported 123 kg of agarwood chips to Dubai in October, an achievement the state government had described as an important step towards expanding the industry’s international reach.
Chief Minister Sarma had said the traditional agarwood industry supports more than 50,000 farmers and workers. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Assam accounts for around 81 per cent of India’s agarwood resources.
Agarwood is a fragrant wood formed in trees belonging to the Aquilaria genus. It is widely used in the manufacture of perfumes, incense, essential oils and other traditional fragrance products.
The designation of Guwahati airport as an export point is expected to strengthen the logistics chain for the sector and facilitate access to overseas markets.
