The Lawrence Bishnoi gang was allegedly seeking to establish its dominance over Mumbai’s criminal network by challenging the influence historically associated with Dawood Ibrahim and the D-Company, according to findings emerging from the investigation into the firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff.
Mumbai Crime Branch investigators believe the gang wanted to recreate an atmosphere of fear similar to that associated with the city’s underworld in the 1990s, when threats from organised crime groups could reportedly intimidate businessmen, builders and film personalities.
A senior police official said the alleged objective was to establish one-sided dominance in Mumbai, potentially allowing the gang to expand its extortion activities and target builders and members of the film industry.
Police have arrested 12 people in connection with the firing at Shroff’s car. During the investigation, the Crime Branch also recovered audio clips in which alleged underworld figures are mentioned. The recordings are undergoing forensic examination as investigators work to establish their authenticity, identify the people heard in them and assess their possible links to the case.
Investigators are examining whether the firing was an isolated incident or part of a wider attempt to spread fear and strengthen the gang’s presence in Mumbai.
The police are also probing the alleged network behind the attack and the roles of those suspected of planning and executing criminal activities. The investigation is continuing, and the claims about the gang’s broader objectives have not been established in court.
