Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday accused the Congress of failing to give Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel the recognition he deserved and repeatedly attempting to sideline his legacy.
Addressing an ‘Ekta Run’ organised in New Delhi to mark Patel’s 151st birth anniversary, Shah said the contribution of the country’s first Deputy Prime Minister could not be erased from public memory despite what he described as attempts by the Congress to forget him.
He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, with initiating the construction of the Statue of Unity, describing the world’s tallest statue as a major tribute that brought Patel’s contribution and personality to national attention.
Shah also highlighted Patel’s role in national integration, saying he had helped unite the country within 1,218 days. He said the India shaped by Patel’s vision continued to stand proudly before the world.
The Home Minister used the occasion to appeal for public participation in the government’s campaign against drug abuse. He urged people to help achieve the target of making India completely drug-free by December 31, 2029, describing a ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ as an essential step towards building a ‘Viksit Bharat’.
Shah also referred to the government’s efforts to eliminate Naxalism, claiming that the country had made significant progress towards that goal by March 31 this year.
He said Patel’s birth anniversary had been observed as National Unity Day since Modi became Prime Minister.
Highlighting key decisions taken under the present government, Shah cited the abrogation of Article 370, which gave Jammu and Kashmir special constitutional status, and the campaign against Naxalism as major achievements.
