The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will organise a conclave titled ‘Zakhm 84 De’ in Chandigarh on November 4 to highlight different aspects of the 1984 anti-Sikh massacre, the victims’ decades-long struggle for justice and efforts towards their rehabilitation.
Addressing a press conference in Ludhiana, Kewal Singh Dhillon said the event aims to familiarise younger generations with the tragedy, the suffering of victims and their families, and the long struggle to secure justice.
He said the conclave would provide an opportunity to revisit the events of 1984, examine the circumstances surrounding the massacre and discuss accountability within the democratic and justice delivery systems.
Sharing the programme details, Dhillon said the event would open with a special exhibition featuring photographs and documentation of incidents related to the massacre. The exhibition is intended to help younger generations understand the scale and impact of the tragedy.
The conclave will begin with an inaugural session, followed by four thematic sessions and a concluding discussion on rehabilitation.
Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who represented victims in proceedings related to the Sajjan Kumar case before the High Court and the Supreme Court, will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session.
The first thematic session, titled ‘When and How Did the Genocide Take Place?’, will feature survivors sharing their personal accounts and experiences of the 1984 massacre.
The second session, ‘Was the Genocide a Conspiracy?’, will examine the perspective that the anti-Sikh genocide was part of a larger conspiracy. Speakers will include senior Supreme Court advocate H.S. Phoolka, who led a decades-long legal battle for the victims; former National Commission for Minorities Chairman Tarlochan Singh; and BJP national spokesperson R.P. Singh.
The third session, titled ‘Murder of Justice’, will focus on allegations of denial of justice to victims, destruction of evidence and political patronage extended to those accused.
The fourth session, ‘Punishing the Guilty: BJP’s Efforts’, will highlight efforts to protect victims during the massacre, the subsequent struggle to secure justice and initiatives aimed at bringing those responsible to justice, Dhillon said.
The concluding session will focus on the rehabilitation of families affected by the 1984 massacre and efforts to help them rebuild their lives.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will attend the session and share details of initiatives undertaken by BJP-led governments for the rehabilitation of victims and their families.
