Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is heading to New Delhi to participate in the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan, where opposition parties are set to mobilise support for what they describe as a campaign to defend democracy, the Constitution and citizens’ voting rights.
Announcing his participation in a social media post on Saturday, Satheesan said he would join thousands of people at the gathering and stand alongside citizens in defence of the country’s democratic foundations.
“India is calling. Tomorrow, I will be at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi to stand with lakhs of citizens in defence of democracy, the Constitution, and the right to vote,” he posted.
Describing the mobilisation as more than an ordinary political protest, the Chief Minister said it would send a message that citizens would not remain silent when democracy was under threat. He also called for wider participation with the slogan, “Chalo Dilli. November 1. Ramlila Maidan.”
The rally is part of the opposition alliance’s campaign against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Opposition parties have argued that the revision could lead to the exclusion of eligible voters.
Their demands include the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, an immediate halt to the SIR exercise and restoration of names allegedly deleted from voter lists. The alliance has also called for a return to paper ballot-based elections.
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been actively campaigning for the mobilisation, appealing to students, farmers, workers, women, young people and civil society groups to attend.
The rally is expected to bring together leaders from several opposition parties, providing a platform for a coordinated challenge to the Election Commission’s electoral roll revision process.
Satheesan’s participation will also signal the Kerala leadership’s support for the INDIA bloc’s campaign at the national level.
