Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, known for directing Bollywood films such as Kaante, Kaabil and Shootout at Wadala, has died at the age of 59 following a head injury at his residence.
Gupta passed away on October 30 after reportedly slipping in the bathroom at night and sustaining a head injury, according to sources close to the filmmaker.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news in an Instagram post, describing Gupta’s death as shocking and a major loss to the film industry.
“Another talent gone too soon. He was a wonderful narrator, full of life persona and a passionate filmmaker,” Pandit wrote, offering condolences to Gupta’s family and loved ones. He said details of the last rites would be shared later.
Gupta made his directorial debut in 1994 with Aatish: Feel the Fire, starring Aditya Pancholi and Sanjay Dutt. He subsequently directed films including Ram Shastra, Khauff and Jung.
His association with Sanjay Dutt produced several notable films, including Kaante, Musafir, Zinda and Shootout at Lokhandwala. Zinda was an unofficial adaptation of the South Korean film Oldboy.
Gupta also directed and co-produced Shootout at Wadala, a prequel to Shootout at Lokhandwala, and produced projects such as Dus Kahaniyaan.
While filming Kaante in Los Angeles in 2001, the September 11 terrorist attacks forced the production to shift planned scenes away from several locations that had become sensitive.
His later work included The Miranda Brothers, released in 2025, which he directed and produced. The film starred Harshvardhan Rane and Meezaan Jafri and revolved around two brothers pursuing careers as footballers while dealing with a family tragedy.
Gupta is survived by his wife, Anu Lekhi.
