A vessel travelling outbound through the Strait of Hormuz caught fire around 25 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, off Oman’s coast, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Friday.
In an advisory posted on X, UKMTO said it had received a third-party report that a vessel transiting out of the strategic waterway was on fire. The cause of the incident remains unknown.
The agency said the status of the crew, the extent of damage and any environmental impact had not been established at the time of reporting. It advised vessels operating in the area to proceed with caution and report suspicious activity while authorities investigate.
The incident comes amid a series of reported attacks and security concerns involving commercial shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier in October, the Kuwait-flagged oil product tanker M/T Al Dasma, carrying 21 Indian seafarers, was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the strait. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said all crew members were safe. UKMTO located that incident about 11 nautical miles west of Bukha, Oman.
A report by Times Kuwait said the strike triggered a fire aboard the tanker, which was later extinguished, and that the vessel remained stationary.
In another incident reported earlier this month, two Singapore-registered container vessels were struck by unidentified projectiles while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA).
One of the vessels, GFS PRIDE, sustained damage, caught fire and subsequently sank, the MPA said. All 21 crew members were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported.
The authority said it was in contact with the vessel’s management company and expressed concern over continuing attacks on commercial shipping in the strategic waterway.
