Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday expressed concern over the deteriorating health of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, in prison and her reported transfer to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology. The party alleged that her family had not been informed about her health condition or the decision to shift her to the hospital.
PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram shared a statement from the party’s central media department on X, saying the party had received reports that Noreen Niazi was taken to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology after falling ill in jail. The party described the failure to inform her family about the transfer as “extremely regrettable and concerning”.
“The alleged illegal detention of 70-year-old Noreen Niazi, the risks to her health, and her hospital transfer without taking the family into confidence are extremely serious matters, on which the Punjab government and relevant authorities must provide immediate clarification,” the PTI said in its statement.
The party called for the provision of the best medical facilities to Noreen Niazi under the supervision of cardiologists. It demanded that all necessary diagnostic tests and treatment be provided without delay and that her family be immediately informed about her health. It also called for her relatives to be allowed to meet her and enquire about her well-being.
The PTI further expressed concern over the treatment of “innocent women” held in prison, including Imran Khan’s sister. It called for respect for women’s dignity, human rights and constitutional protections under all circumstances.
“Turning political affiliation into a crime and holding women in detention for political pressure is unacceptable in any civilised and democratic society,” the party said.
The statement came after Noreen Niazi’s lawyer, Rana Mudassar Umer, said she was taken to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology on Wednesday following a recommendation by jail doctors, Pakistani daily Dawn reported. The lawyer said her family had not been informed about her deteriorating health. He also alleged that jail authorities were not providing medicines to Imran Khan’s sisters.
According to Dawn, Imran Khan’s three sisters — Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi — have been in prison since September 21 under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, following orders issued by the Lahore Deputy Commissioner.
The three women are currently serving the second term of a 30-day detention under the ordinance, which was extended on October 7.
