Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis etched his name into the record books by scoring his second Test century during the third and deciding Test against South Africa at Newlands on Thursday.
Returning to the Test Playing XI after nearly a year, Inglis scored a 132-ball hundred in Australia’s first innings, helping the visitors gain a lead.
With this knock, Inglis became the first Australian cricketer to score multiple centuries in all three formats of the game. His latest hundred was his second in Test cricket, following his maiden century against Sri Lanka last year.
Only three Australian players have scored multiple centuries in T20 Internationals. Besides Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, with five centuries, and Aaron Finch, with two, have achieved the feat. However, neither has scored multiple centuries in all three formats.
Maxwell has also scored four ODI centuries but has only one Test hundred, which came against India in 2017. Finch, meanwhile, has 17 ODI centuries but never scored a Test hundred. This makes Inglis the only Australian to have registered more than one century in each of the three formats.
Inglis returned to the Playing XI for the series-deciding Test after last featuring in the 2025 Ashes at home. He had been recovering from a fractured finger sustained during the preceding ODI series against South Africa.
Australia made four changes to its lineup, bringing Inglis back alongside Cameron Green, Nathan Lyon and Cooper Connolly.
Inglis reached his century on the third day of the contest, putting the visitors in a strong position as they responded to South Africa’s first-innings total of 329. He came to the crease when Australia were 184/3 and remained at the other end as Green was dismissed by Simon Harmer for 65.
After Australia lost two quick wickets on Day 2 to slip to 185/4, Inglis joined Alex Carey to strengthen the visitors’ position by the close of play. He continued his aggressive approach on the third day, reaching the hundred off 132 deliveries with a reverse sweep against Harmer.
Inglis was eventually dismissed by Harmer for 102. His innings featured 11 fours and two sixes, helping Australia secure a first-innings lead.
