Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his controversial remark involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father, saying political disagreements should not cross the boundaries of personal decorum.
In a statement, Singh said Kharge’s comment at a Congress event in Patna had left him “stunned and deeply hurt”. He expressed concern that the remark had come from the national president of a party that describes itself as the country’s oldest political organisation.
Singh accused the Congress leadership of attempting to justify Kharge’s words instead of acknowledging the controversy and expressing regret.
He said the remarks had hurt the sentiments of millions of people and argued that ideological differences should not lead to personal insults or bring the families of political leaders into political disputes.
“Oppose as much as you like, question policies, and criticise the government, but at least do not cross the boundaries of personal decorum,” Singh said.
The Defence Minister also accused the Congress of suffering an ideological decline and said the public would judge the conduct of political parties. He asserted that such remarks would neither shake Modi nor weaken his commitment to public service.
The controversy erupted during Kharge’s address at a Congress event in Patna on Sunday. While criticising the Prime Minister, the Congress president was reportedly interrupted by a person in the audience who said Modi would not leave power.
Kharge responded with the remark, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” — a comment that triggered criticism from BJP leaders.
The exchange has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress, with the two parties disputing the standards of language and conduct expected in public life.
