Zimbabwe all-rounder Nyasha Gwanzura has described her impressive bowling performance against India in the opening T20I as a “massive confidence booster” after putting the hosts under early pressure in their three-match series.
Gwanzura claimed three wickets for 18 runs in the first T20I at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium on Friday, dismissing India’s newly appointed captain Smriti Mandhana and young batter Anushka Sharma in her opening over before removing vice-captain Shafali Verma in the fourth over.
Her early strikes reduced India to 19/4 while chasing a target of 115, raising hopes of an upset. However, debutant Niki Prasad and Deepti Sharma combined for an 82-run partnership to guide India to victory.
Reflecting on her performance ahead of Sunday’s second T20I, Gwanzura said taking crucial wickets and receiving the backing of her teammates had made the experience particularly rewarding.
“It really felt good, being able to take those wickets for the team and helping my team, backing me all the way, so it really meant a lot,” she said.
The Zimbabwe all-rounder said she had focused on sticking to her plans and keeping her approach simple, adding that the performance had significantly boosted her confidence.
Looking ahead to the second match, Gwanzura identified strike rotation and keeping the scoreboard moving as key areas Zimbabwe needed to improve while attempting to challenge the formidable Indian side.
She also said the team was keen to make the most of its time in India, both on and off the field, and learn from competing against one of the leading teams in women’s cricket.
The second T20I was scheduled to take place on Sunday, with both teams unchanged after India were asked to bowl first. India had an opportunity to seal the three-match series before the third T20I, scheduled for Tuesday.
