Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have mutually agreed to end their association, bringing an end to a coaching tenure that delivered three Indian Premier League (IPL) titles for the five-time champions.
The decision comes after a disappointing 2026 season in which Mumbai managed just four victories. Injuries, player availability concerns and reported dressing-room unrest contributed to a challenging campaign, according to reports.
The franchise has reportedly shortlisted multiple candidates for the vacant head coach position, with interviews expected to take place next week. Jayawardene is unlikely to continue with Mumbai Indians in another role.
The former Sri Lanka captain first took charge of Mumbai in 2017 and guided the franchise to IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020. The team won consecutive championships in 2019 and 2020, establishing Jayawardene as one of the most successful coaches in the franchise’s history.
After stepping down as head coach, Jayawardene served as Mumbai Indians’ global head of performance from 2022 to 2024, overseeing coaching, scouting and strategic planning across the franchise’s international teams. He returned as head coach in 2024 under a two-plus-one-year arrangement.
Mumbai reached the playoffs in 2025 but slipped to ninth place in the 2026 season.
Reflecting on his association with the franchise, Jayawardene said Mumbai Indians had been a special part of his journey for more than a decade. He thanked the players, coaching staff, fans and owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust and support.
“I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead,” he said.
Mumbai Indians owner Nita M. Ambani also acknowledged Jayawardene’s contribution, praising his leadership, integrity and commitment to the franchise.
“On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years. We will always cherish the journey we have shared and the memories we have created together,” she said, adding that he would always remain part of the franchise’s “#OneFamily”.
Mumbai Indians will now look for a new head coach as they prepare for the next IPL cycle, aiming to return to title contention after a difficult season.
