Sydney, October 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Australia women’s head coach Shelley Nitschke has described the team’s preparations for the inaugural Champions Trophy as “tricky”, with the side set to have limited international T20 opportunities before the tournament in February 2027.

Australia will begin a three-match T20I series against New Zealand at home on Sunday. The series will be their final international fixtures in the format before the Champions Trophy, with no further T20Is scheduled between the New Zealand series and the tournament.

The team will subsequently travel to Sri Lanka for three One-Day Internationals (ODIs), while players are expected to feature in domestic and franchise competitions, including the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL), as part of their preparations.

Australia will enter the inaugural Champions Trophy aiming to add another title after winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year in England.

Speaking ahead of the opening T20I in Sydney on Saturday, Nitschke said the upcoming series remained important despite the gap in international matches before the tournament.

“Every time we take the field, it’s important to represent Australia, but also wanting to grow the game every time we get out there,” she said.

She added that the team would use the series to reinforce its approach and continue developing as a unit.

“For us there’s no other international T20s before the Champions Trophy so, they’re as important as anything. There’s still a bit of time before that Champions Trophy, and some domestic cricket to play. But it’s just another opportunity for us to get out there as a team and working on and putting out the type of cricket that we want to play,” Nitschke said.

WPL and WBBL to play key roles in preparations

Nitschke said the absence of international T20Is over the next three months presented a challenge, particularly as the full Champions Trophy schedule was yet to be confirmed.

She expects the WPL to provide valuable preparation for Australian players participating in the league, while warm-up matches are also likely before the tournament. Players outside the WPL could use the WBBL to gain additional experience in the format.

“The WBBL is a really good chance for some players to play a lot of T20 cricket between now and then too,” she said.

On the upcoming series, Nitschke said New Zealand’s revamped team and coaching staff would provide a competitive test. She noted that the visitors would include young players and were likely to arrive with confidence and little pressure.

Australia, she added, remained focused on improving individually and collectively while respecting the challenge posed by their trans-Tasman rivals.
