Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday demanded the resignation of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from the Lok Sabha, a day after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) dismissed him from service following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment.
In posts on Facebook and X, the Chief Minister described the dismissal of the Inner Manipur MP as “deeply disturbing and shameful”, citing the university’s official order stating that its Internal Committee had investigated the allegations and recommended major punishment.
“Such grave misconduct by a holder of high legislative office and a professor is unacceptable and tarnishes the image of Manipur,” Khemchand Singh said.
Arguing that an MP represents the voice of the people, he said the dignity of Parliament must be upheld and public trust protected. He called on Akoijam to resign on moral grounds, saying the MP had lost the moral authority to continue as a public representative.
The demand followed an order issued on Friday by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, confirming Akoijam’s dismissal with immediate effect.
According to the order, an inquiry was conducted by the university’s Internal Committee into allegations of sexual harassment against Akoijam, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in the School of Social Sciences.
“Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee, the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam,” the order stated.
The university said the decision followed the committee’s findings and its recommendation for major punishment under the applicable service rules, invoking the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules.
Media reports said at least 11 female students lodged complaints against Akoijam in May. The complaints allegedly accused him of inviting students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempting to sexually harass them. Some students also reportedly alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in the classroom.
The complaints were reportedly examined during the inquiry preceding the university’s decision. However, the specific findings of the inquiry were not available at the time of filing this report.
No official statement or response from Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, was available at the time of publication.
