Churchill Brothers will look to begin their Indian Super League (ISL) journey with a winning performance when they host Mumbai City FC at Fatorda Stadium on Saturday, with head coach Dimitris Dimitriou aiming to build a strong footballing identity and bring joy back to Goa.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 pm and marks a significant milestone for the Goan club as it makes its debut in the country’s top-tier football league.
Dimitriou said leading a historic club such as Churchill Brothers in the ISL was a great honour. He also thanked club owner Churchill Alemão and his family for their support as the team prepares for the challenge.
“It is a great honour to lead a historic club like Churchill Brothers in the ISL. Our aim is to build a strong football culture and establish a style of play that reflects the identity of this club. We know the expectations are high, but we are preparing to be competitive against every opponent. Most importantly, we want to give back to our fans for the love they have shown us and bring smiles back to Goa through football,” the coach said.
Acknowledging the strength of their opening opponents, Dimitriou highlighted Mumbai City FC’s squad quality and the experience of head coach Manolo Márquez.
Churchill Brothers have had a relatively short pre-season, but Dimitriou said the team had completed 37 training sessions over four weeks and was well prepared for the opener. The retention of 12 players from the previous season is also expected to provide continuity and strengthen the team’s cohesion.
The club will look to turn that preparation into a competitive display against Mumbai City FC, with the match holding added importance for supporters eager to see Churchill Brothers make their mark in the ISL.
Churchill Brothers player Kingslee Fernandes described representing the club in the competition as a proud moment and expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness.
“It is a proud moment for me to represent Churchill Brothers in the ISL. We have a good mix of young and experienced players, and our coach has motivated us throughout the training sessions. The preparations have been good, and we are looking forward to tomorrow’s match. We will give our best and aim to make our supporters proud,” Fernandes said.
