The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday questioned the Congress over its continued association with Manipur MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) dismissed him with immediate effect following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment.
BJP leader Harsh Malhotra, speaking to IANS, alleged that Akoijam, a JNU professor and Congress MP, had brought disrepute to the teaching fraternity. He said educators were expected not only to impart knowledge but also to uphold moral standards.
Malhotra claimed that 13 female students had levelled sexual harassment allegations against Akoijam and that a university committee had investigated the complaints and found him guilty, leading to his dismissal from JNU.
Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Malhotra questioned why the party had not taken action against Akoijam despite the university’s decision.
“I want to ask Rahul Gandhi through you, since Akoijam is considered very close to Rahul Gandhi and is his close aide then why hasn’t he been dismissed from the Congress party yet? How long will Rahul Gandhi’s double standards continue?” Malhotra said.
He accused the Congress leadership of remaining silent when allegations of misconduct involved members of its own party. Malhotra also urged Gandhi to personally address the issue, claiming that women in Delhi wanted to know what action the Congress would take against the MP.
The BJP leader also criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks on the detention of protesters in Delhi amid the proposed Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demonstration at Jantar Mantar, which is seeking the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Malhotra argued that measures to control what he described as aggressive protests should not automatically be characterised as an act of fear. He referred to the 1966 protest against cow slaughter outside Parliament, the 1988 farmers’ protest on Janpath, and demonstrations linked to the Ram temple movement in 1990 and 1993.
Alleging that authorities had used force, including cane-charges and tear gas, during those protests, he challenged the Congress to explain its criticism of the current security arrangements.
Malhotra also questioned the Congress over its participation in the Jantar Mantar protest and demanded that party leaders explain why they were seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Earlier on Saturday, Kharge had criticised the Union government in a post on X, alleging that young people, students, lawyers, journalists, social activists, farmers’ union leaders, YouTubers and content creators questioning the government were being detained.
“Modi Govt has turned the ‘Mother of Democracy’ into a ‘Muzzled Democracy’! The cowardice of the BJP-RSS is on full display today,” Kharge said.
