External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on Wednesday to discuss strengthening the India-US strategic partnership and cooperation on key regional and multilateral issues.
Following the meeting, Rubio said on X that he was pleased to meet Jaishankar and that the two countries were building on their strategic partnership while coordinating on regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts.
Jaishankar said he reiterated India’s interests and concerns regarding the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 (SRIA). The two ministers also discussed developments in the Gulf and Ukraine, he said.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level week, during which Jaishankar has been holding a series of meetings with world leaders and senior diplomats.
Jaishankar is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on Saturday during the afternoon session beginning at 3 p.m. local time, which will be 12:30 a.m. on Sunday in India.
India-US ties have faced challenges over proposed US legislation that would impose 100 per cent tariffs on buyers of Russian oil. The measure has not yet been enforced. Differences over trade also remain as efforts towards a trade agreement have yet to produce a conclusive outcome.
Despite these issues, cooperation between the two countries continues in several areas. India and the US are members of the Quad, alongside Japan and Australia, and work together on security and strategic issues in the Indo-Pacific.
At the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New Delhi in May, the four countries reiterated cooperation on maritime security, port infrastructure and energy, amid concerns over China’s growing influence in the region.
The meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio also comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly urged Russian President Vladimir Putin last month to bring an end to the Ukraine conflict.
