Actress Raveena Tandon has spoken out against the popular perception that the iconic song “Aaja Gufaon Mein Aa” is a horror number, saying the song was originally presented with a very different theme.
Tandon made the observation while appearing as a special guest on the latest episode of the dance reality show India’s Best Dancer Season 5. The semi-final episode featured high-energy performances, including a routine by contestant Geetanjali and choreographer Anuradha on “Aaja Gufaon Mein Aa” and “Ye Raat”.
While Tandon praised the performance as “flawless”, she had one reservation about the presentation — particularly the decision to portray Geetanjali as a frightening character.
“These children are so beautiful, I have only one complaint about the entire performance. Otherwise, for me, this performance was flawless. But I have one complaint: why did you make such a beautiful girl look so terrifying?” she said.
Tandon pointed out that “Aaja Gufaon Mein Aa” was not originally a horror song, despite the way it is frequently recreated.
“Actually, this was not a horror song. What I see today is that mostly choreographers, when they recreate this song, give it a horror format. This song is actually a very beautiful song, the way it has been sung,” she said.
She also recalled the original choreography by Raju Subramaniam, saying the song represented women’s empowerment rather than something negative.
“There’s never been another song like this. Raju Subramaniam did the choreography. It is about women power. It doesn’t have to be negative in that,” Tandon added.
The actress’ comments came as the contestants presented their interpretations of the popular songs during the semi-final episode, which featured several high-stakes performances ahead of the finale.
India’s Best Dancer Season 5 is available on Sony Entertainment Television and Sony LIV.
