Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar has opened up about growing up as the daughter of celebrated actress Rakhee Gulzar and veteran lyricist Gulzar, saying that despite their immense fame, her childhood at home was remarkably normal.
Meghna, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film ‘Daayra’, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Kareena Kapoor Khan, spoke about her upbringing during a media interaction with IANS in Mumbai’s Andheri West.
She said both her parents, despite being hugely celebrated personalities, remained grounded at home and treated her like any other child.
“Both my parents have been huge stars in their own right and are immensely famous personalities. But at home, they have always been very grounded, and very normal. I have had a very normal upbringing,” Meghna said.
She recalled that her mother would discipline and scold her like any other parent, while her father would often pamper her and intervene when her mother was disciplining her.
“My mother has scolded me like any normal mother does to her child. I have also got thappad from her. My father has pampered me and come in the way of my mother disciplining me like all mothers and fathers do,” she said.
Meghna added that growing up in such an environment meant she never viewed her parents through the lens of their public personas.
“That doesn’t come in the way. Yes, every time somebody comes and tells me, ‘Oh, I’m such a fan of your father, or I would do anything to just touch your father’s feet, or I happened to meet your father and it was the best moment in my life’. I’m not surprised because I’m aware of the effect my parents have on people,” she said.
She added that she is grateful for the respect and admiration her parents receive, but does not experience the same sense of awe herself.
“I respect that tremendously. But do I get that sense of awe with them? No, because for me, they are my mother and my father,” Meghna said.
