Ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Indore for the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme, senior party leader Sajjan Singh Verma described the event as historic and claimed that around 2.5 lakh students had registered voluntarily.
Verma said the programme was intended as a non-political platform for students and claimed that Rahul Gandhi had significant popularity among young people.
“Today’s programme will be historic. It is a non-political programme. Rahul Gandhi has immense popularity among the youth, especially students in India. Students believe that there is someone in India who is raising his voice for their rights and fighting for their rights,” Verma told IANS.
He said similar programmes had been organised in Gaya, Pune, Kota and Dehradun, where, according to him, thousands of students participated voluntarily. Verma claimed that the Indore edition would be the biggest and said around 2.5 lakh registrations had been received.
Ahead of Gandhi’s visit, some students were also seen getting his image tattooed on their hands. At the same time, posters targeting the Congress leader appeared at several locations in Indore and were subsequently removed by Congress workers.
The poster controversy added to the political exchanges surrounding the programme. BJP leaders disputed Congress’s claims about the posters, while Congress leaders alleged that attempts were being made to disrupt the event.
Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said the large student participation reflected concerns over education-related issues.
“A hearty welcome and greetings. Students from here are participating in large numbers because they are unhappy and suffering under this government. They are against paper leaks and the corruption in the education department,” he said.
The ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme is focused on issues concerning education, recruitment and unemployment, including paper leaks and alleged irregularities in government recruitment. The Indore edition is the fifth in the outreach series, following programmes in Kota, Dehradun, Prayagraj and Pune.
Ahead of the event, Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari said the programme would provide young people with a platform to raise their concerns.
“Today is the day of meaningful dialogue with the voices, questions and dreams of the youth in Indore. Come, witness the questions related to education, opportunities and rights reaching the platform of democracy,” Patwari said.
The programme is being held at a ground near the Regional Park after permission for the proposed venue at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was not granted. The Congress subsequently secured temporary use of land from the Indore Development Authority for the event.
