Boxers who win medals at the 2026 Asian Games will receive direct entry to the 2027 World Boxing Championships, giving them an automatic pathway into India’s qualification process for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced an expansive selection policy for the 2027-28 cycle, aimed at providing Indian boxers with a structured pathway to qualify for the maximum possible number of Olympic berths.
The policy has been framed in line with the qualification system developed by World Boxing and approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Under the qualification pathway, the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan will be the first Olympic qualifying event, followed by the Asian Qualifier in China and two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028, scheduled to be held in Italy and Hungary.
The BFI said its Selection Criteria for 2027-28 builds on the selection criteria issued on December 8, 2025.
As per the policy, the 2026 Asian Games medallists will be selected as the main entries in their respective weight categories for the 2027 World Championships. The gold medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships will serve as reserve entries in those categories.
For weight categories in which India does not win a medal at the 2026 Asian Games, the gold medallists of the 10th Elite National Championships will be selected as the main entries. The same provision will apply to Olympic weight categories that were not included in the 2026 Asian Games.
Boxers who reach the quota-bout round at the World Championships but fail to secure an Olympic quota place will receive direct entry to the Asian Qualifier, according to the BFI policy.
The remaining slots will be decided through Ranking Selection Trials among Elite National Campers. Boxers will first have to enter the National Coaching Camp through the pathways specified in the selection policy.
A similar selection mechanism will be followed for the two World Qualifying Tournaments in 2028 in Italy and Hungary.
BFI President Ajay Singh said the policy was designed to provide boxers with a clear and structured route towards the Los Angeles Olympics.
“This policy has been framed to give our boxers a clear and structured route to Los Angeles 2028, built around consistent performance at the National Coaching Camp and at World Boxing’s qualification events,” Singh said.
The National Coaching Camp will initially include medallists from the 10th Elite National Championships, Asian Games medallists and wild-card selections made by the BFI Selection Committee in accordance with the provisions of the policy.
For non-Olympic weight categories, the gold medallist of the 10th Elite National Championships will be the main entry for the 2027 World Championships, while the silver medallist will be the reserve.
