The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted a suspected cross-border heroin trafficking cartel in Jammu and Kashmir, seizing 5.160 kg of heroin and arresting three people, including the alleged mastermind and supplier, the agency said on Wednesday.
Acting on specific intelligence on August 22, the NCB intercepted a vehicle at Panjtirthi in Jammu. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 5.160 kg of heroin from two accused persons, both residents of Baramulla.
Following the seizure, the agency launched a follow-up operation based on information about another Baramulla resident allegedly identified as the mastermind and supplier of the trafficking network. The NCB said its team traced the accused to Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh and arrested him on August 24, within two days of the initial seizure.
According to the NCB, a preliminary investigation indicates that the seized heroin was part of an organised cross-border supply chain. The agency suspects that the contraband originated in Pakistan and entered India through the Uri border sector.
The NCB said the operation was aimed not merely at apprehending carriers but at dismantling the wider trafficking network. Investigators are now working to identify the alleged cross-border suppliers, financial links, transporters, local associates and intended distribution network.
The latest action follows two heroin seizures made by the NCB’s Jammu unit earlier this month. The agency seized 438 grams of heroin on August 12 and another 603 grams on August 13.
Further investigation and intelligence gathering are underway to establish the cartel’s forward and backward linkages, the NCB said.
The agency also urged citizens to support efforts against drug trafficking and addiction by sharing credible information through the National Narcotics Helpline, MANAS, at 1933. The NCB said information could be shared confidentially and reiterated its commitment to sustained, intelligence-led action against drug trafficking networks as part of the objective of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat”.
