Karnataka Police have arrested Janata Dal (Secular) general secretary Manjunath C., also known as Gottigere Manjanna, for allegedly assaulting a traffic police officer while he was on duty in Bengaluru, officials said on Monday.
Manjanna, 65, was arrested by Hulimavu police late on Sunday night and taken to the police station for questioning. The alleged incident occurred in the Gottigere area, which falls under the Hulimavu police station limits.
A video purportedly showing the incident has also circulated widely on social media. The footage allegedly shows the JD(S) leader confronting and kicking the traffic police personnel.
According to the complaint, traffic police officer Arun Manjappa Badagoudara was regulating traffic when he signalled Manjanna’s vehicle to stop. Manjanna allegedly objected to being stopped and confronted the officer, asking why his vehicle had been stopped.
He is accused of grabbing Arun by the collar and attempting to assault him. The complaint further alleges that Manjanna raised his leg in an attempt to kick the traffic policeman.
People present at the spot reportedly intervened and separated the two, preventing the confrontation from escalating.
Following information about the incident, Hulimavu police took Manjanna into custody. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the alleged assault, including the events leading up to the traffic officer’s instruction to stop the vehicle.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of DCP Electronic City M. Narayana and ACP Satish K.M.
The incident comes days after Karnataka Police registered an FIR against Aishwarya, daughter of BJP MLA B. Suresh Gowda, for allegedly abusing and slapping a woman police sub-inspector during a dispute at a temple in Mandya district.
The incident occurred on August 12 at the Arathi Ukkada temple in Srirangapatna taluk during Bhima Amavasya celebrations. Woman PSI Savitha Patil alleged in her complaint that she was verbally abused, slapped, threatened and obstructed while performing her official duties.
Suresh Gowda, the Tumakuru Rural MLA, later apologised for his daughter’s conduct and said anyone found guilty should face legal consequences, while calling for a fair investigation.
