The Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday staged simultaneous protests outside the homes and offices of 22 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs over their alleged boycott of the Delhi Lakshmi Scheme for women in the Assembly.
Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra led the campaign, with party leaders and workers holding demonstrations across different constituencies. The BJP alleged that the AAP legislators had opposed the scheme despite its stated focus on women.
At the residence of Leader of Opposition and Kalkaji MLA Atishi, the protest was led by Delhi BJP General Secretary Yogita Singh, Secretary Naresh Vashisht and former MP Ramesh Bidhuri. The BJP alleged that Atishi’s absence from the Assembly for an extended period and her reported stay in Goa had prevented her from adequately representing the interests of women.
The BJP also held demonstrations against Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan, Kondli MLA Kuldeep, Seelampur MLA Chaudhary Zubair Ahmed, Seemapuri MLA Veer Singh Dhingan and Babarpur MLA Gopal Rai.
Protests were similarly organised against Karol Bagh MLA Vishesh Ravi, Deoli MLA Prem Chauhan, Tughlakabad MLA Sahi Ram Pehalwan, Chandni Chowk MLA Punardeep Singh Sahni, Gokulpur MLA Surendra Kumar and Patel Nagar MLA Pravesh Ratna.
Demonstrations were also held against Ambedkar Nagar MLA Ajay Dutt, Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh, Sadar MLA Som Dutt, Ballimaran MLA Imran Hussain, Matia Mahal MLA Ale Mohammad, Sultanpuri MLA Mukesh Ahlawat, Delhi Cantonment MLA Virendra Kadian, Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha, Badarpur MLA Ram Singh Netaji and Kirari MLA Anil Jha.
The protests were led by different BJP office-bearers, former legislators, councillors and party wing heads, including representatives of the Mahila Morcha, Yuva Morcha, OBC Morcha, Minority Morcha, Kisan Morcha and Scheduled Caste Morcha.
The BJP workers raised slogans against the AAP legislators and criticised them over their stand on the Delhi Lakshmi Scheme.
The coordinated demonstrations came as the BJP stepped up its attack on the AAP over the issue, with the party seeking to portray the legislators’ opposition to the scheme as being against the interests of women in Delhi.
