At least eight people, including the suspected gunman and his grandparents, were killed and more than 30 others injured after a shooting incident at a school and a residence in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok on Friday.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that nine of the injured were in critical condition following the attack.
According to local authorities, police received information around 10 am local time after a gunman opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province.
Eyewitnesses said the attacker, reportedly wearing a purple tracksuit, fired multiple rounds inside the school premises. Videos circulated by local media showed continuous gunfire during the incident.
Police identified the alleged attacker as a 14-year-old student who lived with his grandparents. Investigators later found the bodies of his grandparents at their residence and suspect that they were killed before the school attack.
Authorities recovered a handgun from the scene, which was initially believed to belong to the suspect’s grandfather. A large quantity of ammunition was also found in the teenager’s bag.
During the investigation, police reportedly found that the suspect had searched for and studied details of a previous school shooting case in the United States on his computer.
Prime Minister Anutin said preliminary information suggested that excessive academic pressure may have contributed to the attack, as the teenager’s grandparents were reportedly strict regarding his studies.
A friend of the suspect also told authorities that he had been under significant pressure recently, had prepared extensively for the attack, and had shared pictures of the firearm on social media.
Anutin said such incidents must not be repeated and announced that the government would work towards strengthening gun control measures. He added that authorities would increase monitoring of firearm ownership and ensure that weapons are not carried in public places except for official duties.
