Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday alleged that Meta has restricted access to his Instagram account in India, claiming the social media company is suppressing voices critical of the Central government.
In a statement and a video shared on X, the former Delhi Chief Minister said he had received a notification that his Instagram account had been restricted in India but had not been given any explanation despite repeated attempts to seek clarification.
Kejriwal claimed that his enquiries with Meta’s India office and emails to the company had failed to elicit a substantive response beyond routine acknowledgements.
He further alleged that several other individuals who have spoken out on issues such as alleged examination paper leaks and ethanol-blended fuel policies have also faced similar restrictions on their social media accounts.
According to Kejriwal, he began receiving messages from users claiming that their Instagram accounts had also been suppressed after he raised the issue publicly.
Appealing to affected users, the AAP leader urged anyone who believes their account has been similarly restricted to contact him through direct messages or comments so that the matter could be collectively pursued with Meta.
Tagging Meta and Meta India in a post on X, Kejriwal questioned the reasons behind the alleged restriction of his account and criticised the company’s response to his enquiries.
He also alleged that the Centre was pressuring Meta and Instagram to curb accounts critical of the government. However, the Central government and Meta have not responded publicly to these allegations.
The allegations come amid an ongoing political debate over social media regulation and freedom of expression in India.
