Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday visited flood-affected areas of Rajouri district to take stock of the damage caused by recent flash floods and landslides, assuring affected families of all possible assistance from the government.
During his visit, the Chief Minister interacted with residents impacted by the disaster and expressed solidarity with families who suffered losses to their homes, livelihoods and property. He also reviewed the condition of damaged public infrastructure in the affected areas.
The Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X that Omar Abdullah assured people of complete government support and assessed the situation arising from the recent floods.
“He also reviewed the impact of the damage caused to public infrastructure and livelihoods in the affected areas,” the CMO said.
The Rajouri visit comes after severe cloudbursts and heavy rainfall in Poonch and Rajouri districts during July and August triggered flash floods and landslides, causing widespread destruction.
The calamity has claimed at least 11 lives, besides damaging residential houses, roads, bridges, power infrastructure and other public facilities. Several vehicles were swept away or trapped in floodwaters, while rescue and relief operations were launched across the affected regions.
A major cloudburst and landslide on July 19 in the Murrah area of Surankote in Poonch district completely destroyed a residential area, killing eight members of a family.
Several cattle sheds collapsed in areas including Mendhar and Surankote, resulting in livestock losses, while many families suffered extensive structural damage to their properties.
The flash floods also damaged footbridges, local roads and stretches of the Rajouri-Poonch National Highway, along with internal roads in Thannamandi, Kotranka and Mendhar.
Power infrastructure, including 33 KV transmission lines from Draba and Manjakote, was also badly affected, disrupting electricity supply in several parts of Rajouri and Poonch districts.
The administration has been carrying out relief and restoration work in the affected areas following the widespread damage caused by the extreme weather events.
