Members of the Kashmiri diaspora staged a protest outside the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford, United Kingdom, condemning alleged violence by Pakistani security forces against protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The demonstration was attended by elderly people, women and children, who expressed solidarity with the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a civil society group spearheading protests in the region. The demonstrators called for an end to what they described as a crackdown on peaceful protesters by Pakistani authorities.
Carrying placards with messages such as “Pakistan Stop Brutalities”, “Pakistan Stop Killing Kashmiris in Rawalakot” and “We Stand with Awami Action Committee”, the protesters raised slogans against the alleged actions of Pakistani forces.
The protest in Bradford comes amid growing demonstrations by Kashmiri diaspora groups outside Pakistani diplomatic missions in several countries. Protesters have been seeking international intervention over what they claim is a severe crackdown on civilians in PoK.
The unrest in PoK has reportedly resulted in more than 50 deaths and left hundreds injured in recent days. Activists have claimed that the actual number of casualties could be higher.
Several British parliamentarians have also raised concerns over the situation. Labour Party MP Liam Byrne described reports of live firing on peaceful protesters in PoK as “deeply alarming”.
Highlighting concerns over alleged communication restrictions and human rights violations in the region, Byrne said the All Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, a cross-party group in the UK Parliament, had called for immediate engagement with Pakistan’s High Commission in London and urged the UK government to raise the issue with Pakistani authorities.
“We need immediate de-escalation. We need calm heads. And crucially, we need the human rights of Kashmiris to be observed now,” Byrne said.
Another British MP, Adnan Hussain, termed the deaths of civilians in PoK a tragedy and called for a full, independent and transparent investigation into any allegations of excessive or unlawful use of force.
Hussain urged all sides to exercise restraint, protect civilian lives and engage in peaceful dialogue, stating that lasting solutions could only emerge through constructive engagement rather than further escalation.
