Kolkata Police have arrested a Thai woman from a spa in south Kolkata for allegedly staying in India beyond the validity of her visa and without required travel documents, officials said on Monday.
The arrest was made during a raid at a spa on Sarat Bose Road on Sunday following a tip-off received by the police. The woman was detained after she allegedly failed to produce documents confirming her legal status in India.
A police official said an investigation into the matter was underway and further details would be shared after verification.
During the preliminary inquiry, police examined her passport and immigration records and found that her Indian tourist visa had expired on February 27, 2021. Her Thai passport was also found to have expired in 2025, officials said.
Investigators are now probing how she continued to stay in India for several years without obtaining necessary permissions, along with details about her place of residence, contacts and possible links, if any, with other individuals or networks.
The arrest comes amid increased checks by law enforcement agencies in West Bengal to identify foreign nationals allegedly staying in the country without valid documents.
A special team has been formed to conduct verification drives at hotels, guest houses, spas, rented accommodations and other establishments where foreign nationals may be residing.
Central agencies have also been informed about the case. The woman is expected to be produced before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Kolkata, while she remains in the custody of Tollygunge Women’s Police Station pending further legal proceedings.
Police officials said the investigation will also examine the circumstances that enabled her alleged prolonged stay in India despite the expiry of her visa and passport documents.
