Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh alleged on Saturday that his car was attacked and vandalised in Uttarpara, Hooghly district, while he was travelling to attend former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s public meeting in Serampore.
According to Ghosh, a group of people stopped his vehicle and hurled stones, eggs and bricks at it. He also alleged that some attackers struck the car’s windows with iron rods, shattering the rear windshield and leaving him with glass shards on his body.
“I was sitting next to the driver. Stones were thrown at me. My body was filled full of glass shards,” Ghosh said.
The TMC MLA alleged that the attackers repeatedly told him to turn back and not attend Banerjee’s meeting, which he said indicated that the incident was aimed at preventing him from reaching the rally.
Ghosh accused the police of failing to intervene and said he would go to Bhabani Bhavan, the West Bengal Police headquarters in Kolkata, to raise the matter. He said the attackers were still moving freely and claimed it would be difficult for him to proceed to the meeting without police intervention.
Banerjee condemned the incident before leaving for the Serampore rally and alleged that BJP workers were behind the attack, calling it unacceptable in a democracy. The BJP has denied involvement. Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha rejected the allegation and claimed the incident stemmed from factional rivalry within the TMC.
Police had not publicly fixed responsibility for the attack at the time of reporting.
The incident came amid heightened political activity ahead of Banerjee’s Serampore rally. The Calcutta High Court had permitted the TMC to hold the September 26 meeting at Serampore Court Maidan, subject to conditions including a cap on attendance and arrangements for maintaining law and order.
