Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Friday conducted a surprise inspection of lighting and security arrangements at Bonta Park in the Northern Ridge and directed authorities to ensure that every public recreational space is well-lit and secure for women and children.
The inspection near Delhi University focused on on-ground security, lighting arrangements and the elimination of dark spots along walkways. Sandhu was accompanied by the Chief Secretary and the DCP of North Delhi.
“Safety of women and children is a top priority,” Sandhu said in a post on X, directing authorities to ensure that public recreational spaces remain well-lit, secure and regularly patrolled, with lighting kept fully operational.
He said every Delhi resident should be able to walk, exercise and enjoy public parks without fear.
The inspection came close to the alleged gang rape of a minor at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir, in which three accused were later arrested.
Earlier in the day, Sandhu stressed the need for safer streets for women and children through improved lighting and deployment of the Pink Force.
He also congratulated the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for securing the first position in the ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa’ campaign and said the goal of building a world-class city would require AI-enabled responsive civic services, zero-waste neighbourhoods and Jan Bhagidari as a shared civic responsibility.
“Our frontline workers are the true brand ambassadors of the city. Their safety, dignity, welfare and institutional support must remain paramount as we build a Viksit Dilli for a ‘Viksit Bharat’,” the L-G said during an interaction with NDMC staff.
Sandhu interacted with sanitation workers, gardeners, engineers and other NDMC employees and commended their role in keeping the national capital clean, green and well-maintained.
He said New Delhi was not merely the country’s administrative centre but also the face and first impression of India for visitors from across the world.
“The cleanliness, greenery, upkeep and overall appearance of the National Capital therefore carry immense significance,” Sandhu said.
NDMC Chairman Kumar Dwivedi, Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal, MLA and NDMC Member Virendra Singh Kadian, Council Members Anil Valmiki and Sarita Tomer, Secretary Rahul Singh, Financial Advisor Rakesh Singh and other senior officers and employees were present during the interaction.
