The sons of former Pakistan captain and prime minister Imran Khan have criticised Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi over the controversy surrounding an interview about their imprisoned father, accusing the board of making “absolute fools of themselves” by reportedly threatening to halt play during the Lord’s Test against England.
The controversy erupted during the second Test after Sky Sports aired an interview conducted by former England captain Michael Atherton with Sulaiman and Kasim Khan. The brothers spoke about their father’s health and conditions in prison in Pakistan.
Reports subsequently claimed that the PCB threatened not to send Pakistan’s players back onto the field for the post-lunch session on the first day unless the interview was taken off air.
“They made absolute fools of themselves,” Kasim told The Telegraph on Sunday.
Sulaiman said he had expected a response from the PCB but was surprised by the reported threat to withdraw from play. He argued that the cricket board had no role in seeking the removal of an interview concerning a former Pakistan player and said the discussion focused on Khan’s health and humanitarian concerns rather than politics.
With Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister, facing scrutiny, the brothers also voiced concerns about their father’s solitary confinement and alleged lack of transparency over his medical condition.
Pakistani authorities have repeatedly denied allegations of mistreatment and maintained that Khan is receiving appropriate medical care.
Sulaiman disputed those assurances, saying the family had not been provided with verifiable evidence about his father’s condition. He said the last reliable information they had directly from Khan regarding his health dated back around six months, when he spoke about problems involving his eye and alleged neglect.
The allegations made by Khan’s sons could not be independently verified from the available report.
