Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the loss of life in a building collapse at Satya Niketan in south-west Delhi and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the tragedy.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office said Modi was “distressed” by the incident and conveyed condolences to the families who lost loved ones. He also said the authorities involved in relief and rescue operations were working at the site and assisting those affected.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Delhi Police Commissioner and the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assess the situation. He also cancelled his scheduled events in Goa following news of the tragedy.
Shah said all agencies were coordinating closely to carry out rescue operations and provide medical assistance to the injured.
“Deeply distressed by the collapse of a building at Satya Niketan in Delhi. Spoke with the Chief Minister, Commissioner of Police, Delhi, and the Director General, NDRF, and assessed the situation on the ground,” Shah said in a post on X.
He added that the local administration and NDRF were conducting intensive rescue operations in coordination and that all necessary medical assistance was being provided to those injured.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin also expressed concern over the incident and spoke to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to take stock of relief efforts.
“The tragic building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan is deeply concerning. Spoke with Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Ji to assess the situation,” Nabin said.
He said rescue and relief operations were underway on a “war footing” and that all possible efforts were being made to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured.
Earlier, Delhi Police said the building was around 40 to 50 years old and consisted of a basement and five upper floors. It was being used as a paying guest (PG) accommodation for students.
Repair work was underway in the basement when the structure collapsed. At least one person was killed, while six others were rescued by first responders.
