Former India opener Virender Sehwag has revealed that his personal favourite innings is not his iconic 309 against Pakistan in Multan but the century he scored on his Test debut against South Africa in 2001.
Speaking to IANS during promotions for the upcoming streaming reality show Rise & Fall, which he is set to host, Sehwag said his debut innings carried special significance because it proved he could succeed in Test cricket.
“The triple century in Multan, 2004 is loved by many but if I talk about myself, my best innings was my first Test cricket. I played a lot of one day games earlier. Nobody thought I could be a test player. I got the opportunity, and I proved to everyone that I can be a Test cricketer,” he said.
Sehwag scored 105 off 173 balls in India’s first innings against South Africa in Bloemfontein in November 2001. He followed it with 31 off 36 balls in the second innings. India posted 379 in the first innings, with Sachin Tendulkar contributing 155, while South Africa made 563 before India were dismissed for 237 in their second innings. South Africa won the Test by nine wickets.
Sehwag became only the third Indian batter to score a century on Test debut, achieving the feat against a strong South African bowling attack.
Asked about the famous “Multan ka Sultan” tag associated with him after his historic 309 against Pakistan in 2004, Sehwag said he did not know who coined the title.
“I don’t know who gave this title. I don’t know who gave this title but whoever gave this title must be a media person,” he said.
Sehwag’s 309 in Multan came during a record 336-run third-wicket partnership with Tendulkar. He was dismissed at 509 for three, while Tendulkar remained unbeaten on 194 as India declared on 675 for five.
Pakistan were bowled out for 407 in their first innings and 216 in the second, giving India an innings-and-52-run victory. Sehwag was named Player of the Match.
