Thousands of Congress workers staged a protest in Chandigarh on Thursday, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleging that the Election Commission’s functioning had compromised the electoral process.
The protesters raised slogans against Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging collusion to undermine the electoral process.
Addressing the demonstration, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring alleged that Kumar was working in favour of the BJP and claimed that the Election Commission had been reduced to an “extension counter” of the ruling party.
“What is seen to be an electoral victory, is actually the theft of the elections (vote-chori),” Warring said, alleging irregularities in the elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. He also claimed that the 2024 parliamentary elections were rigged.
Warring reiterated the Congress’ demand that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab be scrapped. He alleged that the exercise could disenfranchise genuine voters and demanded that the forthcoming Punjab Assembly elections be conducted using the electoral rolls applied during the parliamentary elections.
He also accused the Chief Election Commissioner of making voter registration difficult for first-time voters, alleging that the requirements under Form-6 were impractical and could prevent younger voters from exercising their franchise.
Former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa alleged that the Election Commission and the BJP had been working together to rig elections. He claimed that the functioning of both had been exposed before the public and argued that removing the current CEC should be the first step towards restoring confidence in the electoral system.
Several senior Congress leaders attended the protest, including AICC secretary Suraj Thakur, MPs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Dharamvir Gandhi, Punjab Congress working presidents Sukhwinder Singh Danny and Raj Kumar Verka, AICC Co-Treasurer Vijay Inder Singla, PPCC Treasurer Amit Vij, and several MLAs and former legislators.
