External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday hit back at a Pakistani journalist who raised allegations against India during a press conference at the United Nations, saying, “A terrorist country is asking me that? Come on!”
The exchange took place during a joint news conference by Jaishankar and Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti following the launch of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers.
According to the account of the exchange, the Pakistani journalist continued shouting comments after Jaishankar’s response. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, then told the reporter, “You hear him loud and clear.”
The remarks came a day after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was questioned by an Indian journalist at the UN headquarters about terrorism.
As Sharif entered the UN premises, he was asked when Pakistan would stop harbouring terrorists. Later, as he left, he was asked when Pakistan would prosecute Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed. Sharif did not respond to either question and walked past the journalists.
Saeed, the founder of the Pakistan-based proscribed terrorist organisation LeT, is listed by the United Nations as a global terrorist and is subject to a US bounty.
India has repeatedly accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border terrorism, while Pakistan has denied such allegations and has itself accused India of supporting terrorism.
The exchange at the UN comes amid renewed diplomatic sparring between the two countries during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Jaishankar’s response was also reported by multiple outlets on Friday.
Earlier this week, Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi criticised Pakistan at the UN Human Rights Council, arguing that Islamabad should focus on development rather than territorial claims or what India describes as the export of terror.
Tyagi also raised allegations concerning the treatment of civilians in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), citing reports of deaths, arrests and restrictions on access to food and medicine.
