Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab president Aman Arora on Friday questioned the functioning and timing of central investigative agencies, particularly ahead of elections, alleging that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) become active when elections approach.
Arora alleged that investigative agencies were being used to intimidate and pressure opposition parties and said such use was an “assault on democracy”.
“Whenever elections approach, agencies such as the ED and CBI, and even the Election Commission, suddenly become active. It gives the impression that these institutions are working according to their political bosses. Using investigative agencies to intimidate and put pressure on opposition parties is not justified. It is an assault on democracy,” he said during a media interaction.
Taking a dig at the Congress, Arora said political parties welcoming agency action against their opponents should remember that similar action could eventually affect them.
“Those who are welcoming ED action against their political opponents today should remember that tomorrow the same agency can reach their doorstep,” he said, adding that the broader question was whether investigative agencies were being used for political purposes.
Arora also questioned the consequences of prolonged custody in cases where accused persons are eventually acquitted.
“A person can be arrested and kept in custody for months or even years. But if that person is ultimately acquitted, who compensates them for the loss they have suffered? Who returns those years of their life?” he asked.
Referring to AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, Arora said the prolonged periods of custody and subsequent acquittals in cases he referred to raised questions about the timing and manner in which such cases were pursued.
On the BJP’s rallies and its campaign against drugs in Punjab, Arora said the BJP could hold as many rallies and political programmes as it wanted, but claimed that people in the state would not pay attention to them.
On former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s recent remarks about his political position in the BJP, Arora said Singh had himself expressed disappointment and spoken about his political situation. He said he had sympathy and good wishes for the former Chief Minister.
Asked whether the AAP could invite Captain Amarinder Singh to join the party, Arora categorically said that no such discussion had taken place.
