Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attended a ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Park in Delhi, organised to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
The Jana Sangh is the precursor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Modi was seen seated among the attendees, listening to devotional performances and clapping along with the artists. He also interacted with members of the audience during the programme.
“Bhajan Clubbing in Delhi. Spectacular!” Modi said in a post on X.
The event brought together devotees, young people and cultural enthusiasts and showcased a format that combines traditional devotional music with the presentation style of a contemporary live concert.
The programme featured live renditions of bhajans dedicated to Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and other Hindu deities. The performances were accompanied by modern lighting, sound systems and stage production.
‘Bhajan Clubbing’ has emerged as a format combining bhajans, kirtans and devotional chants with the ambience of live music events. Organisers typically use professional stage design, amplified sound, dynamic lighting and contemporary musical arrangements while retaining the devotional character of the performances.
The trend has evolved from smaller youth-oriented devotional gatherings into organised public programmes, particularly in major cities. Social media has also contributed to its visibility and expansion, with organisers increasingly incorporating modern production elements.
The format has gained particular attention among younger audiences, including Gen Z, by presenting traditional devotional music in a contemporary setting.
Modi has previously spoken positively about the trend, describing it as a meeting point between spirituality and modernity. His participation in Friday’s Delhi programme brought additional national attention to the emerging cultural format.
Earlier in the day, Modi paid tribute to Deendayal Upadhyaya on his birth anniversary and recalled his philosophy of “Antyodaya”, which emphasises the upliftment of the most disadvantaged sections of society.
The Prime Minister described Upadhyaya’s ideas as a continuing source of inspiration for public welfare and nation-building.
