Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Ukraine against what he described as “provocative acts” and further escalation, saying such moves would not achieve Kyiv’s objectives and could instead worsen the situation.
“They must understand that no provocative acts or escalation of tensions will deliver the outcome they seek. Such moves will only make the situation worse for them,” Putin said at a press briefing on Friday.
Putin said Russia’s military responses had prompted Kyiv to seek ceasefire arrangements covering several areas, including attacks on energy facilities and airstrikes.
He said Moscow had begun responding to actions it attributed to Ukraine, including an alleged attempt to impose a naval blockade and strikes on storage facilities and civilian infrastructure.
According to Russian assessments cited by Putin, Ukraine had damaged more than 100 vessels in the Black Sea.
The remarks came amid continuing tensions over the Russia-Ukraine conflict and wider disagreements between Moscow and Washington.
Earlier this month, Moscow said sanctions targeting Russia’s oil and gas exports would neither restore relations with the United States nor lead to peace in Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump has signed the Russia sanctions legislation into law. The measures target Russia’s energy and defence industries as well as its “shadow fleet” of tankers.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia had largely adapted to sanctions and found ways to minimise their impact. He also said Russia’s trading partners opposed the restrictions.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier on Friday that he and Trump had agreed to meet in New York, describing the planned meeting as a potential opportunity to advance diplomatic efforts.
“We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelensky said in a post on X after speaking with Trump.
Zelensky also said Ukraine was ready to take serious steps towards peace in coordination with the US team.
