England white-ball captain Harry Brook created history on Thursday by smashing the fastest-ever double century in One-Day International (ODI) cricket during the tri-series match against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Pakistan.
Brook reached the 200-run mark in just 114 balls, breaking the previous record held by India captain Shubman Gill, who had scored a double century off 117 balls against the West Indies in Guwahati earlier this year.
Enjoying his time on Pakistan grounds, Brook tore into the Sri Lankan bowling attack with an aggressive display of stroke-play. He completed his double century in the final over of England’s innings and was dismissed off the last ball after producing a remarkable knock.
The England skipper scored 202 off 116 deliveries, striking 21 fours and 10 sixes. While he attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers throughout the innings, Eshan Malinga, Dasun Shanaka and Janith Liyanage faced particularly fierce treatment, with Brook scoring against each of them at a strike rate exceeding 200.
Brook also became the first England batter to score an ODI double century. Ben Stokes previously held the record for the highest individual ODI score by an Englishman, with his 182 against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023.
The innings also made Brook only the second non-opener to register an ODI double century, following Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, who produced a memorable double hundred against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup.
Brook’s explosive performance powered England to 429/4, their eighth total above 400 in ODIs and their fourth-highest score in the format. England’s record remains 498/4 against the Netherlands, followed by 481/6 against Australia and 444/3 against Pakistan.
