Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Pargat Singh on Thursday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for concluding the Punjab Assembly session in just nine minutes, accusing it of avoiding accountability on critical issues facing the state.
Singh said the government had failed to answer questions on important matters, including the murder of anti-drug activist Parminder Singh Jhota, and instead chose to evade scrutiny by bringing the Assembly session to an abrupt end.
Holding Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann responsible for the deteriorating administrative situation and the government’s failures, Singh demanded his resignation, alleging that there was no visible governance in Punjab.
He said government employees, computer teachers, Elementary Teacher Training (ETT) teachers and Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) employees, along with people from various sections of society, were struggling for their rights. Instead of addressing their grievances, he alleged, the state government was seeking ways to avoid them.
Singh said the AAP had made tall promises about governing Punjab, but the state was now witnessing administrative mismanagement and a lack of accountability. He alleged that those who had been running Punjab from Delhi had politically distanced themselves from the situation but could not escape responsibility for the damage caused to the state.
He asserted that if the Congress formed the government, accountability would be fixed for those responsible for harming Punjab’s interests and doing injustice to its people. He estimated that around 125 to 150 people might have to answer for their actions, adding that no one would be spared.
Reacting to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Punjab, Singh welcomed him in his official capacity but said visits and political rhetoric alone would not resolve the state’s problems.
He demanded that the Central government explain the concrete steps taken to curb the drug trade in Punjab and safeguard the state’s interests.
On the Parminder Singh Jhota case, Singh said that if a demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe had been raised, the Centre should consider it seriously and take appropriate action.
Questioning the BJP’s policies, the Punjab Congress chief said the Centre’s role and accountability must be clearly established on all matters concerning Punjab’s interests.
