Social media influencer Amir Shokeen was arrested by Delhi Police on Thursday, hours after an FIR was registered against him over an alleged incident of racial harassment and humiliation involving an individual from Tripura, officials said.
The case relates to a video circulating on social media that allegedly depicts the individual being subjected to humiliating treatment. An FIR was registered at Sadar Bazar police station under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Earlier, Shokeen apologised after the video surfaced online and triggered widespread criticism. In a Facebook post, he claimed that the video was scripted and that the individual featured in it was known to him.
Shokeen said the man had previously worked at a friend’s café in Ahmedabad and described the exchange as a humorous video in which both parties were joking. He maintained that he had no intention of insulting anyone.
Officials said this was not the first time an FIR had been registered against Shokeen. Previous cases under Sections 323, 324, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had also been registered against him, they added.
Tripura Police had earlier registered a case against the influencer under relevant legal provisions in connection with the controversy.
The Delhi Police action followed a formal complaint by the Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSF’D), which sought registration of an FIR and an urgent investigation into the alleged treatment of the individual by a social media content creator.
The development came after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju raised the issue on social media.
In its complaint, the TSF’D expressed concern over a video circulating on Instagram that allegedly showed an individual from Tripura being subjected to sexual assault, harassment and humiliating treatment by a social media content creator.
The forum stated that, if established through an investigation, the allegations would raise serious concerns about the individual’s dignity, bodily autonomy and safety, as well as the need to protect people from the Northeast against racial discrimination and harassment.
The allegations are subject to investigation.
