Police intervened to defuse a dispute at a temple in Jabalpur after objections were raised over alleged shops being operated by Muslim traders during the ongoing Ganesh festival, officials said.
The dispute was reported late Monday night at the Shri Siddh Ganesh Hanuman Temple in the Gwarighat area, where workers associated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal protested over the alleged presence of non-Hindu traders on the temple premises.
Additional Superintendent of Police Suryakant Sharma said police reached the temple soon after receiving information about the dispute.
“During the Ganesh festival, some people complained that the shops set up there were owned by Muslim traders. Upon receiving the information, a police team immediately reached the spot,” Sharma said.
He said the temple committee manages the premises and has the authority to decide who is permitted to set up temporary shops there.
According to police, discussions were held with the people involved and the matter was resolved through mutual consultation and persuasion. Both sides were pacified and the situation remained peaceful.
The temple committee, meanwhile, denied the allegation that it had permitted non-Hindu traders to operate shops on its premises.
The protesters had questioned the allotment of temporary stalls during the festival and objected to the alleged presence of Muslim traders. Their protest resulted in a gathering at the temple late Monday night, prompting police intervention.
Police said no violence or other untoward incident had been reported in connection with the dispute. Officials said the situation at the temple was normal and under control.
The temple attracts large numbers of devotees during the Ganesh festival, when temporary stalls are set up for visitors.
Police said the situation was being monitored and appropriate action would be taken if any specific complaint involving a violation of law was received.
