Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Tamil Nadu in the first week of October for an interaction with college students under the party’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme, according to plans discussed by state Congress leaders.
The proposed visit is part of the student outreach initiative led by Gandhi. The Congress describes ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ as a nationwide campaign focused on issues concerning students and the education system.
Tamil Nadu Congress president Manickam Tagore is planning a large programme during Gandhi’s proposed visit. A meeting of state party leaders at the Congress headquarters, Sathyamurthy Bhavan in Chennai, discussed arrangements for the student interaction.
The leaders decided to hold the programme during the first week of October, although the party has not yet announced the exact date or venue. Details regarding the colleges that may participate, the number of students and the format of the interaction are also yet to be finalised.
The proposed programme is expected to provide college students an opportunity to interact directly with Gandhi and raise issues concerning education, employment and other matters affecting young people.
Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ initiative has already featured student interactions in several states. The Congress launched the campaign in June, describing it as a nationwide movement focused on concerns including examination irregularities, paper leaks, rising education costs and recruitment-related issues.
Gandhi addressed a ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme in Indore on September 19, where students raised concerns related to education, recruitment and examination issues.
The Tamil Nadu Congress is expected to work out details concerning student participation, venue arrangements and the agenda before announcing a formal schedule.
Details of Gandhi’s wider itinerary in Tamil Nadu have not been released so far, and it is not yet clear whether he will attend any other programmes during the proposed visit.
