The sisters of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan were again denied a meeting with him at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail on Wednesday, according to local media reports, amid continuing allegations that authorities are not fully implementing court directions on family access.
Imran’s sisters and six lawyers reached the prison to meet him but were not allowed access, advocate Awais Younas Chaudhry told Dawn. He said the sisters waited until after 6:30 p.m. without being informed whether the meeting had been approved.
The denial comes amid a series of court directions concerning Imran’s access to his family and lawyers. On August 18, the Supreme Court ordered weekly meetings between Imran and his family and directed authorities to facilitate telephone conversations with his sons. The court also ordered arrangements for his medical treatment and examination.
On September 2, Imran’s sister Dr Uzma Khan filed another contempt petition in the Supreme Court, alleging non-compliance with the August 18 directions, including the arrangements for family meetings and calls with his sons.
Uzma’s petition named Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Adiala Jail Superintendent Sajid Baig, Punjab Inspector General of Prisons Mian Salik Jalal and other senior officials as respondents. It alleged that Imran had not been permitted to meet his sisters and had not spoken to his sons since March.
The Islamabad High Court also directed Adiala Jail authorities earlier this month to restore family meetings and facilitate telephone conversations between Imran and his sons, while ordering measures to ensure humane treatment and meaningful interaction for Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi.
Imran’s sister Aleema Khan has meanwhile criticised the judicial process, alleging that court proceedings involving Imran and Bushra Bibi have been delayed. Her remarks are political claims and have not been independently established.
The dispute follows the Supreme Court’s August 18 order for Imran to be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for medical examination and treatment. Authorities instead took him to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on August 21 before returning him to Adiala Jail after doctors reportedly declared him medically fit.
The latest denial of access is expected to remain part of the wider legal dispute over implementation of judicial directions concerning Imran’s detention, healthcare and family access.
