China produced a series of standout performances at the 20th Asian Games on Friday, with Yang Liuyue setting two world records in the women’s 61kg weightlifting competition as Chinese athletes also secured major victories in swimming, equestrian dressage and women’s football.
Yang lifted 112kg in the snatch to establish a new world record before completing a gold-medal-winning total of 251kg, also a world record. DPR Korea’s Pak Jin Hae, who won silver, set a world record in the clean and jerk with a 139kg lift. Yang subsequently matched the mark.
China also celebrated a remarkable swimming performance as 19-year-old Zhang Zhanshuo completed a seven-gold haul by winning the men’s 400m freestyle.
Zhang won seven of the eight events he entered, including the men’s 200m freestyle, where he set an Asian record. His victories also included the men’s 800m and 1,500m freestyle events and three relay golds.
China won the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay in an Asian-record time of 7:00.17, while the team also took gold in the 4x100m freestyle in 3:10.60, another Asian record, and the 4x100m medley.
In equestrian, China claimed the team dressage gold for the first time in Asian Games history. Rao Jiayi, Yu Jiayi, Wu Yue and Gu Zhanzhao combined for 208.148 points. South Korea finished second with 205.265 points, while Japan took bronze with 204.117.
China also advanced to the women’s football semifinals after Wang Shuang scored in the 109th minute to secure a 1-0 extra-time victory over Vietnam in Osaka.
China will face DPR Korea in the semifinals on Tuesday. DPR Korea reached the last four after defeating Chinese Taipei 5-1 in the other quarterfinal.
China had topped Group G with seven points from two wins and a draw. Vietnam progressed as the best third-placed team after collecting one point from a draw and two defeats in Group E.
Japan’s teenage skateboarders also struck gold in the park events. Fifteen-year-old Mizuho Hasegawa won the women’s title with 94.03 points, while Izuru Nagahara secured the men’s gold with 88.96 points.
Hasegawa’s score came on her second of four final runs at Aichi Sky Expo Hall. Taiwan’s Lin Yi-fan finished second with 85.15 points and Japan’s Misugu Okamoto took bronze with 82.86.
In the men’s event, Taiwan’s Ku Yong-yan finished second with 87.33 points, while Japan’s Gunjo Shiji claimed bronze with 86.03.
In swimming, Japan’s Shin Ohashi added a bronze in the men’s 50m breaststroke to his two gold medals in the 100m and 200m events. The 17-year-old had set a world record in the 200m on Thursday with a time of 2:04.83.
The day’s results added to a strong showing by China and Japan across multiple disciplines at the Asian Games.
