BJP leaders on Friday criticised the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) over its ultimatum to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign within 48 hours, alleging that attempts were being made to weaken or discredit constitutional institutions.
Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma said CJP was a newly formed party and questioned the direction of its political activities following its demand for the CEC’s resignation.
“We heard CJP’s ultimatum. This is a newly formed party, and I cannot say yet what their expectations or goals are. But the direction in which they have started doing politics raises questions, because there is a history here,” Sharma told reporters.
Referring to CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke’s press conference on Thursday, Sharma questioned whether the party was following a political approach similar to earlier movements that expanded their political base in the name of secularism or through Communist politics.
Sharma alleged that several forces were working to slow the country’s growth and weaken constitutional institutions.
“Our nation is growing at fast speed. Many powers are at play, working to reduce the pace of ‘Viksit Bharat’. Owing to these powers, many tools are growing that are working against the nation, we have to counter these forces too,” he said.
He added that attempts by young people, allegedly influenced by external forces, to “debilitate or defame” constitutional institutions could affect both their future and that of the country.
BJP MP Ghulam Ali Khatana said everyone had the right to protest and express their views in a democratic country.
“India is a very large democratic country. Everyone has the right to protest and put forward their views. Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, democratic institutions and people’s rights have been strengthened and empowered,” he said.
West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh also criticised the CJP’s move, describing it as a “publicity stunt” and alleging that the party was attempting to discredit institutions.
He referred to recent protests and said, “Every 4 to 6 months they bring out a new issue which is against the institutions of the country or against the country. Defames the country somehow.”
Ghosh also referred to the recent Gen Z protests and the criticism directed at CEC Gyanesh Kumar, calling these developments “conspiracies against the nation” and alleging that some elements were attempting to create chaos.
BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa said the CJP’s demand was “baseless” and alleged that the Congress was pushing such issues because it lacked a political agenda.
“You are losing elections left and right; first they blamed the EVM (Electronic Voting Machine), but when that didn’t work, now you are directly blaming the Chief Election Commissioner,” he claimed.
Earlier, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said at a press conference on Thursday that if Gyanesh Kumar did not resign within 48 hours, the party would launch a nationwide agitation. He also said he would sit on strike until the CEC stepped down.
