Amid the ongoing controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Purnia MP Pappu Yadav on Friday made controversial remarks against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, calling for his hanging and demanding impeachment proceedings against him.
Yadav’s remarks came a day after a leading Indian daily reported on criticisms allegedly raised internally by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi over decisions and processes of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in recent months.
Speaking to reporters, Yadav said, “Gyanesh Kumar should be hanged. He should be hanged from an electric pole so that those who steal the rights and votes of the poor, Dalits, weaker and deprived sections learn a lesson.”
He further alleged that Kumar had “committed a big crime” and “suffocated the Constitution”, claiming that democracy had been “murdered”.
Yadav also alleged that Kumar had the support of the RSS, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and demanded that impeachment proceedings be initiated against the CEC.
“The Opposition should unite and boycott all the elections until Gyanesh Kumar resigns. In every situation, the elections in Bihar, Assam and Bengal should be cancelled,” he said.
The Purnia MP alleged that an injustice had been done to people in Bengal, Bihar and Assam and questioned how those responsible could be allowed to continue.
Referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Yadav said, “Rahul Gandhi and I have been fighting since childhood. Everyone has the right to fight and speak, and everyone is welcome.”
He called for opposition parties and leaders to come together against Kumar and demanded a death penalty and a treason case against him.
Yadav’s remarks came a day after Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani also made a controversial statement against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, saying he would have shot him if he were permitted to get away with one murder.
The controversy comes amid the ongoing political debate over the SIR of electoral rolls.
