Amid the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Shiv Sena-UBT leader Priyanka Chaturvedi said on Friday that questions about the exercise were not limited to political parties, with common people also expressing concerns over the process.
Speaking to IANS about opposition parties preparing to bring an impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Chaturvedi said people were beginning to question whether their votes were authorised, valid and protected from tampering.
“Political parties are one side. People are now beginning to wonder whether our vote is authorised, and after being authorised, whether it is valid. Whether it is being tampered with or not,” she said.
Chaturvedi alleged that the additions and deletions of names during the SIR process were being carried out arbitrarily. She also claimed that the two Election Commissioners had raised objections on 14 occasions over the previous 10 months.
According to Chaturvedi, the Election Commissioners had raised concerns about the processes for voter addition, deletion and restoration, alleging that these were not clear and that decisions were being taken without adequate consultation.
She further claimed that the IT infrastructure for electoral rolls was being centralised, arguing that election-related processes should remain decentralised so that State-level election authorities could be empowered.
Chaturvedi also alleged that the introduction of Form 6 was illegal without the required government permission. Citing the example of Goa, she said that Electoral Registration Officers, after verifying voters and recommending restoration of their names, had to send the information to the central database instead of directly restoring the names themselves.
Questioning the Election Commission’s communication on the issue, Chaturvedi said there were no signatures on the press release, no press conference was held and the three Election Commissioners did not sit together.
She also questioned why two Election Commissioners had sought to meet the Cabinet Secretary if, as she put it, the differences were merely initial objections that were subsequently resolved collectively.
Her remarks came a day after a media report claimed differences within the Election Commission over the SIR exercise and other issues. The Election Commission of India has rejected the report.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had called on CEC Gyanesh Kumar to resign and become an “approver” in what he alleged was the “stealing” of votes.
