Celebrity chef and actor Ranveer Brar believes food is much more than a source of nourishment, describing it as the fundamental bond that brings people together and helps shape societies and cultures.
Speaking to IANS in Mumbai’s Andheri West during promotions for his new streaming show Yess Chef, Brar said the connections forged over a shared meal are unlike any other.
“The original bond is food. Two friends can sit and discuss a song or a painting. But when two friends sit together and eat together, there is no comparison to that bond. So, food is the original glue,” he said.
Brar added that food has the power to connect people at every level, from personal relationships and families to communities, societies and entire countries.
“And it connects two people, family, community, society, and country, which makes it very powerful. And I feel very lucky to be in such a business, that even if you don’t want to, people get connected to you,” he said.
The chef, who has been receiving a positive response to Yess Chef, has also previously shared advice on maintaining food safety and freshness at home.
Brar emphasised the importance of buying fresh produce from local markets, noting that the growing popularity of quick-delivery applications has changed the way people shop for vegetables.
“I believe that first of all, do your own shopping from local markets. That is very important if we talk about freshness. All of us have stopped going to the vegetable market. The 10-minute apps have changed the culture of shopping from vegetable markets,” he told IANS.
“When you see fresh vegetables on the whole cart, you understand the value of fresh food. Even if you get a small packet of cabbage, you don’t enjoy it,” he added.
While acknowledging that instant-delivery applications can be useful during emergencies, Brar said visiting local markets and purchasing fresh vegetables should remain a regular practice.
He also advised households to prepare only as much food as they need, explaining that this can help reduce leftovers and the pressure to consume food stored in the refrigerator.
“Last minute apps are fine in an emergency, but it is very important to go to the market and buy fresh vegetables,” he said.
Brar further observed that preparing food in appropriate quantities can reduce the amount of food stored in refrigerators and ease concerns about using leftovers.
“So, the refrigerator is equivalent to the tension in the mind,” he said.
